The airbag computer turns the airbag light on when it detects a problem with any of it's components.

The computer turns the light off after one ignition cycle after the problem is no longer present and moves the code to a history file. Codes in a history file will NOT illuminate the airbag light. The history file can be cleared ONLY using a manufacturer compatible scan tool. The history file will clear after 150 consecutive ignition cycles with no problems detected.

If the airbag light is on every ignition cycle, there is a fault present. This fault needs to be repaired before the light will go out. In order to read the fault code, a manufacturer capable scan tool will have to be used.

UNDER NO CIRCUMASANCES should you ground/jump any of the diagnostic connector pins as computer damage WILL occur. Reading and clearing codes can only be achieved with a scan tool.
Certain fault codes (such *** collision/airbag activation codes) will not clear. These codes are called lached codes. Lached codes never clear and replacement of the airbag computer will be required.

Currently, there are a number of scan tools available to clear and read these codes. The TECH II (factory scan tool), OTC GENESIS, SNAP ON BRICK, SNAP ON MODIS, are the most common. But, they run in the thousands of expense is not justified unless you are a shop owner or technician and can re coupe the costs by charging a diagnostic fee for your services using the scan tool. These fees generally are about $90 per diagnosis
